That SMEs May Thrive in Nigeria

SMEs have succeeded in America, Europe and Asia. It is only in Africa that we are still grappling with the problem of integrating SMEs into our quest for national development. Why have we failed? Well like every human institution, or let me say creation, SMEs have their own problems.
Shmuel Bahat, one of my SMEs lecturers in the Negev Institute, Israel said the Americans defined SMEs as a business where the owner-manager knows the names of all the workers. The implication of this is that we are really talking of very small businesses in terms of space and time. Some relativism you would say.
However in spite of this small size, SMEs are very important. They create employment; they are flexible, serve as veritable sources of innovation and raw materials for the big companies. Small businesses also have the advantage of starting with small capital, thereby limiting their risks and reducing management overheads. 90% of businesses in the economies that are growing in today
